It begins at raw material extraction and ends at final disposal, with manufacturing, transport, packaging, use, and end-of-life all contributing to the total footprint.

This is one reason why traditionally made Indian products — handloom textiles, hand-thrown pottery, hand-pressed oils — often have genuinely lower manufacturing footprints than their industrially produced equivalents, even when the industrial version claims sustainability credentials.

Stage Three: Packaging and Transportation

A product can be made from sustainable materials through responsible manufacturing — and then packaged in layers of plastic and shipped halfway around the world, adding significant environmental cost before it reaches you.

  • A synthetic fabric garment sheds microplastic fibres into water with every wash — the impact is cumulative across hundreds of wash cycles

What sustainable use looks like:

  • Use products fully — don’t discard products before they’re genuinely spent. A half-used bar of soap thrown away because a new one arrived is wasted embodied energy
  • Use as directed or less — many cleaning and personal care products are used in larger quantities than necessary. Concentrated products used correctly reduce both cost and environmental impact
  • Extend product life — store products properly to prevent premature degradation; keep soap dishes draining to extend bar life; keep cutting boards oiled to prevent cracking
  • Wash sustainably — for textile products, wash in cold water, wash only full loads, and air dry where possible

The use phase is entirely within your control — and it’s where your behavior as a consumer directly shapes the product’s lifetime environmental impact.

Stage Five: End of Life — What Actually Happens After

This is where the most significant gap exists between what eco-friendly products promise and what actually happens.

The end-of-life categories:

Genuinely biodegradable: Products made from natural materials — bamboo, wood, cotton, coir, beeswax, uncoated paper — will biodegrade under the right conditions. This means exposure to air, moisture, microorganisms, and time. In a landfill, where conditions are anaerobic and compressed, even biodegradable materials break down very slowly and may generate methane in the process. True biodegradation happens in compost or soil — not landfill.

Recyclable: Glass, metal, certain plastics (PET, HDPE), and clean paper are recyclable in India through the kabaadiwaala network and formal recyclers. For recycling to work, materials must be clean, dry, and correctly sorted. A recyclable product contaminated with food waste or mixed with non-recyclable materials will still end up in landfill.

Compostable: Genuinely compostable materials — certified to standards like EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 — break down in industrial composting conditions within 90–180 days. Home compostable certified products break down in backyard or counter-top composting systems. Most products marketed as “compostable” in India are not third-party certified — check before assuming.

What you can do at end of life:

  • Compost natural material products at home where possible — bamboo pieces, natural fibre scraps, wooden items can go into a compost pile or bin
  • Recycle clean recyclables through your kabaadiwaala or dry waste collection
  • Return products through brand take-back programs where they exist — growing in India, particularly for electronics and packaging
  • Repurpose before discarding — a worn cotton cloth becomes a cleaning rag; a cracked clay pot becomes a drainage layer in a plant pot; a worn wooden item can often be sanded and refinished

How to Evaluate a Product Across Its Full Lifecycle

When considering an eco-friendly product, run through these five questions — one for each lifecycle stage:

  1. Sourcing — Where do the raw materials come from, and are they certified or traceable?
  2. Manufacturing — Where and how is this made? Is the process energy-efficient, chemical-light, and fair to workers?
  3. Packaging and transport — Is the packaging minimal and recyclable? Was the product made close to where I am?
  4. Use — Will I actually use this fully and correctly? Does it require less energy, water, or chemical input than what it replaces?
  5. End of life — Can I compost, recycle, or return this when it’s done? Or will it end up in landfill regardless of how it’s marketed?

A product that scores well across all five stages is genuinely sustainable. A product that scores well on one or two but poorly on others is a partial improvement — worth choosing over conventional alternatives, but not the whole story.
